While there are plenty of home improvement or repair projects that can be easily be handled by individuals who possess the right tools and a few basic skills, sometimes determining if a specific job is beyond your capabilities can be difficult. Before beginning any job, asking yourself three questions may be useful in deciding whether you should go it alone or call in a professional.
Could This Cause a Flood or Fire?
Although tackling a project on your own is an admirable goal, if it could cause massive damage to your home or possessions or puts your personal safety at risk, it may be best to leave it to someone who has the experience to ensure that the job will not end disastrously. These type of tasks typically include anything involving electricity or plumbing; if a technician has to be licensed to complete the work, taking it on yourself is likely a poor idea.
Will Fixing it Myself Void the Warranty?
There are plenty of products in today’s world that come with liberal warranties to ensure that the customer is covered should something happen to an expensive item that was recently purchased. If an item is still under its original or extended warranty, attempting to repair or modify is likely to void the coverage, leaving the customer holding the bill to fix or replace the product. For example, if your new refrigerator is not working well, performing your own sub zero refrigerator repair job is a poor idea; leave it to a trained technician to ensure that the warranty remains effective.
How Long Will it Take to Repair it Myself?
You should also consider how long it will take to repair an item yourself; after all, professional repair technicians are not only trained to fix the problem, they are likely to be able to do it more efficiently than an amateur. Even if a short wait is necessary to secure an appointment with a repair person, it is still likely take you longer to properly complete the work yourself.
Choose Carefully to Avoid Hassles
If you have the appropriate knowledge to take care of your own home improvement projects or repairs, put your skills to work around the house. However, if you’re unsure if it is safe, affordable and efficient to do so, leave it to the professionals who have been trained.
